Software of any kind is susceptible to going bad while it’s stored on a disk. “Going bad” doesn’t always happen in the same way, but it happens, sooner or later. |

If you don’t know much about computers, the question of whether to run the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows may elicit a shrug. Most hardware architectures – that is, the computer processor and the chips that go along with it on the motherboard – are designed to operate as either 32-bit or 64-bit systems. The operating system isn’t as flexible: you’ll need to decide what you want. The choice may not be as simple as it sounds. The Windows 8 “consumer preview” (i.e., Windows 8 beta) is available for download and inspection. This version of Windows 8 will likely be released to consumers as a shelf-ready product late in 2012, and the rollout is meant to generate consumer interest in the product as well as work out the last remaining kinks in the system. What can you expect from the Windows 8 preview, what kind of Windows drivers will be available, and most importantly, should you load this onto a system? |

You’ll be hearing a lot about Windows 8 in the coming weeks, largely because Microsoft has scheduled the consumer preview of its soon-to-be-released operating system on February 29. While the new operating system is designed to support mobile devices, the key to its success or failure will most likely (still) be third-party drivers. |

Windows 7 has been on the shelves for about a year and a half. Prior to that, Windows Vista was the current operating system. While Windows Vista and Windows 7 have a lot in common, not everything about the two operating systems is compatible. One of the standard pieces of troubleshooting advice for Windows 7 drivers is to look for a Windows Vista driver for the same piece of hardware. While that can work at times, there are instances where you’ll need to find a working Windows 7 driver to get the features and performance you’re looking for. |

Certain application updates generate big news, but for the most part, application updates – especially those that don’t involve a version number change – don’t generate a whole lot of press. That is, unless something goes horribly wrong with the new version. Windows drivers tend to fall into that category but that doesn’t mean they don’t have an impact on application performance. |

In its 26-year evolution, Windows has come a long way. One area in which it may never excel, however, is with device drivers and automatic updates. The major problem, which is largely out of Microsoft’s control, is that device drivers generally aren’t made by Microsoft. Instead, device manufacturers write, update and distribute device drivers. |

A little more than a year ago, the biggest gaming news was – by far – the Kinect. This Xbox device was meant to go head-to-head with the Nintendo Wii in the hope of changing the hearts and minds of gamers around the world. Windows driver for the Kinect weren’t available, but in a somewhat surprising move, Prime Sense – the company on whose reference designs the Kinect was built – provided open source device drivers for the Kinect. Microsoft also became involved in some behind-the-scenes open source driver development. |
