Signed Windows Driver Protection Subject Of New Rootkit Attack

signed windows driver hack Signed Windows Driver Protection Subject Of New Rootkit Attack Microsoft increased the security of its 64-bit OS by requiring signed Windows drivers for the latest version of its operating system. Unsigned Windows drivers may still be loaded but they must be authorized by the user each time the system is rebooted. By insisting on signed drivers, Microsoft was hoping to eliminate the system’s ability to load rogue drivers created as part of a malware attack, or just as a function of sloppy programming.

Kernel Driver Vulnerability Gets No Love

windows worm duqu Kernel Driver Vulnerability Gets No Love Windows kernel driver vulnerability got no love from Microsoft on Patch Tuesday this week. Microsoft did fix a host of important vulnerabilities, but the Duqu hack was as yet untouched in a permanent way. That’s not to say that Microsoft has done nothing about Duqu. If you were paying attention to your updates last week, you’ll know that Microsoft zinged out a little stinger designed to help vulnerable systems dodge the Duqu bullet. The little fix simply eliminates access to T2EMBED.DLL, a dynamic linked library used to display True Type ftons.

Monthly Driver Updates Aren’t Just For Windows Anymore

dd0616 Monthly Driver Updates Aren’t Just For Windows Anymore Everyone who works with a Windows-based PC knows (or should know) about “Patch Tuesday.” Patch Tuesday is the second-Tuesday-of-the-month Microsoft “event” that features security, OS and driver updates to the Windows operating system. Patch Tuesday represents Microsoft’s efforts to cut down on the number of automatic updates users must endure when they turn on their computers. Serious … and I mean really serious… fixes are distributed when they’re available and are rarely, if ever, held for Patch Tuesday.
